For over 2000 years humans have been using rudimentary tubes, reeds, gourds, shells, bones, nuts, rocks, the earth, and many other instruments to smoke Tobacco, among other things.  There is no way to measure the ways and means humans have used to enjoy their favorite smoke.  The only thing that is certain is that Pipe smoking evolved after the discovery of fire and before the cigar.
