These “special types” of tobacco are not varietals of Nicotiana tabacum.  Instead, they are names which refer to tobacco which has been grown and processed in a distinct way.  Cavendish, Latakia, and Perique type tobaccos are referred to by their respective names because they are extremely popular in pipe tobacco blends.  Within each special type there are also unique differences that further differentiate these tobaccos.  As you will learn, Cavendish can come in many degrees of light or darkness, while Virginias come in a multitude of colors including red, black, lemon, and orange; each having their own unique flavor+aroma characteristics.
