Varietal Families
VARIETAL FAMILIES

Each of these varietal families (Burley, Oriental, Virginia) is a direct descendant of Nicotiana tabacum.  At one point in history they were individually distinct varietals: today they are the forefathers of contemporary seed strains.  Over time, thousands of popular  hybrids have emerged from the original Burley, Oriental, and Virginia varietals; each one furthering their family’s genetic development.  Some descendants fair better in certain weather or have higher leaf yields,  others show extraordinary disease resistance, and still other varietal hybrids exhibit unique flavor + aroma characteristics.  The diversity, strengths, weaknesses, and ultimate end use of these tobaccos have created a broad and deep family lineage.   As with cigar makers, many pipe tobacco makers do not divulge or discuss the specific varietals they grow or use in a blend: often they grow varietals or hybrids they developed themselves.  Plant genetics are a closely guarded asset for most premium tobacco growers: many consider it their “secret ingredient”.

For our academic purposes, we will study Burley, Oriental, and Virginia tobaccos  at the family level because that is where they are the most distinguished.  As you will learn, these tobaccos are grown, harvested, cured, processed, aged, and used differently.
