Accoutrements College: Cigar Cases

RESEALABLE PLASTIC BAG (Ziptop)

Resealable plastic bags are the most common type of cigar case because most tobacconists use them to package individual cigars. Often referred to as ziptop, Ziploc (registered trademark), or zip bags, these products will retain moisture for well over a week in most cases. These bags can be placed in a drawer, or any place with relatively little air movement to prolong the optimal condition of your cigars. Over time though, humidity will seep through the bag’s seal into the drier ambient air. A tiny humidifier or small piece of damp sponge can be added to supplement humidity if necessary. Since these bags are free to consumers, their cost to benefit relationship is extraordinary: perhaps the best value cigar case available.

CIGAR TUBE

The manufacturer's tube that many cigars come in provides excellent protection and humidity preservation. It is possible for a cigar to maintain its optimal freshness for several weeks or more in an unopened tube. The downside is that the cost of the tube will be incorporated into the price of the cigar so you will pay a premium for the protection. In addition, it is not uncommon to find cigars with blemishes or minor defects packaged inside of cigar tubes, so buyer beware.

AIR TIGHT CASE

Air tight cases inhibit moisture loss by having a very tight seal. Many of these cases offer excellent physical protection against chafing, bumping, bending, dropping or almost any other unintended damage. Remarkably, a high quality air tight case can preserve the humidity of a cigar for weeks and even months, simply by inhibiting the dehydration process.

LEATHER & WOOD

Leather and wood cases are the most traditional and possibly the most elegant type of cigar cases. Some have the useful feature of telescoping, which means they can be extended to accommodate longer cigars. The price of these cases will vary depending on materials used, size, and options. Some brands have a Spanish cedar lining, leather exterior, and crush proof dividers which offer extra protection for cigars. The disadvantage to leather cases is that they are hygroscopic and will absorb humidity away from your cigars. Ultimately, these cases are only valuable for short term storage lasting a day or less.
