OTHER CURING METHODS
Air Cured Tobacco
Exposed to air in the shade for 3 to 8 weeks
- Light Air Cured Tobacco - Maryland and Burley tobacco varieties, very popular for cigarettes
- Dark Air Cured Tobacco - Cigars
Sun Cured Tobacco
Exposed to direct sun for 1 to 2 weeks
- leaves are brighter
- sugar content is higher
- Nitrogen and Nicotine levels are low
- used primarily for Oriental Pipe tobaccos
Fire Cured Tobacco
Exposed to fire (underneath) for 3 to 4 weeks
- leaves will be dark, heavy and oily
- these tobaccos produces a strong, pungent smoke
- used for pipe and cigarette tobaccos
Flue Cured Tobacco
Exposed to contained heat for 5 to 7 days
- leaves become bright yellow and orange-brown
- leaves contain the highest sugar content
- used for pipe and cigarette tobaccos
