VARIETAL FAMILIES: VIRGINIA
Also known as "Bright tobacco", Virginia tobacco is another light tobacco named after the American state where it originated. Today, Virginia tobaccos are the most widely grown varietal family in the world. While most of the Virginia grown in the world is used for cigarettes, higher grade varietals and heavier leaves are used for producing pipe tobaccos.
Virginia tobaccos are naturally high in sugar content and are typically flue-cured after harvest. Large-scale flue curing is done in an enclosed building with furnace-driven heat piped into the room. The temperature is gradually raised over approximately one week while the leaves and stems dry out. This controlled process fixes the sugar content of the leaves at their naturally high level. Virginia leaves vary in color from bright yellow to orange to mahogany brown. Good Virginia tobacco is naturally light in flavor + aroma, sweet, and has a medium (to high) nicotine content.
