BANDING
Cigar bands, the "face" of the cigar, are delicately applied by hand and glued on using a natural vegetable gum. However tedious, this process must be executed perfectly to honor the tobacco and its brand.
UN-BANDING
Un-banding is the ultimate commitment and sacrifice to quality control. Un-banding occurs when the cigar fails to pass the cigar maker's final inspection and must be removed from the inventory. A cigar that is un-banded is not worthy of the brand's face.
BOXING
Premium cigars typically come in wood boxes; many come in Spanish cedar boxes. Cigars are individually placed in boxes (usually of 25 cigars) with the bands aligned, and can be packaged with ribbons, paper cushion, cedar inserts, quality control documents, and marketing propaganda, before being sealed. In addition, many cigars come with additional packaging such as cedar or tissue paper sleeves, tubes, cellophane, or even double banding. After boxing, cigars can be aged further or shipped directly to distributors and Tobacconists.
Cellophane
Cellophane is a thin, flexible, transparent cellulose material made from wood pulp. A Cellophane sleeve will inhibit the loss of moisture from a cigar while it is out of the humidor. In addition, it will protect the delicate wrapper leaf from hazardous contact. Most Premium cigar manufacturers outside of Cuba use cellophane as an extra measure of protection. |
