Outside of Cuba, packaging and sealing procedures vary greatly: there is no "central" planning or coordination for the hundreds of independent cigar makers around the world. The only constant for premium cigar packaging is the attention to detail, care, and craftsmanship. By the time a cigar box is packed and sealed the leaves in it have been touched by human hands over one hundred times. Much time and great care has been taken to preserve its potential. The extraordinary measures taken to package cigars are one part deference to the magical transformation the leaf has made, and also an effort to protect the authenticity of the product. Ultimately, the care taken to package premium cigars should be commensurate with the efforts made to create the cigar itself.
The Wax Seal
This Dominican brand illustrates yet another innovative approach to box sealing: note the wax seal over the ribbon which closes the box.

SHIPPING
In Cuba, cigars are collected from the factories and stored until Habanos S.A. is ready to ship to markets worldwide; except The United States of America. Due to the central planning of the Cuban economy and dire economic needs, cigars are often shipped before they stabilize and begin to synergize.
Outside of Cuba, in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, and other cigar producing countries, cigar makers have far more control over when their cigars are shipped to consumers: this level of control allows for optimal aging after production.
